History of Metro Community News

The Metro Community News dedicates its mission to focus on schools and students of individual communities. The Metro Community News, the weekly newspaper delivered to nearly 300,000 households, serving the greater Buffalo and Niagara region since 1968, has embarked on a new course starting with its April 2000 editions. The publication was purchased in August of 2000 by Strategic Publications, LLC of Hanover, Maryland.

Immediately upon purchasing the company, Strategic contracted American Opinion Research (AOR) to conduct a full readership survey of the Western New York market. AOR is a nationally recognized research firm of Princeton, New Jersey which has conducted research for some of the nation's largest media companies including CapCities/ABC, Hearst Newspapers, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal.

Several interesting facts were discovered in the survey. Most exciting was confirmation that the paper was extremely well read - 71 percent read Metro during an average month. Readership was higher among women than among men and slightly higher in Niagara County than in Erie County.

The survey also indicated a large demand for photos, stories and features about schools and students in their community and, that no publication in the area adequately covered these issues-until now!

With the relaunch of the paper, Metro Community News will be dedicating itself to news about schools relevant to each particular edition. Both the front page and page three, the Community Focus page has specifically been designed to fulfill this goal, but the school information will also be printed throughout the rest of the paper.

The community calendar and 'Blow Off Your Steam', two long-standing and very popular features, will continue to be prominently and consistently displayed. The survey also indicated a strong reader desire for health related news, so our relatively new section, health and wellness, will be a highlight of the paper as well. Adding these to the newly re-designed classified section and the always popular dining & entertainment section rounds the paper into a 'must read' weekly publication.

Over the course of the year, Metro plans to incorporate additional features into the paper, improving the product for readers and advertisers alike.
